• Clean towels

Step-by-Step Instruction on How to Clean Your Bong

Once you have all the materials prepared, you can follow these steps to clean your bong:

1. Disassemble the Bong

The first step is to remove both the bowl and the custom downstem from the bong and place them separately in the two resealable plastic bags. By doing so, you’ll be able to clean both more thoroughly, and there would be less risk of damaging them. 

2. Put Salt and Alcohol Into the Storage Bags

Although there are cleaning solutions available specifically for bongs, they can be a bit pricey. You can get similar results by using 99% isopropyl alcohol and some coarse salt. Pour the alcohol into the storage bag until the parts of the device are submerged. Then, add a handful of coarse salt, and let it sit for a while.

3. Remove Water From the Bong

While you have the bowl and downstem submerged, you can start cleaning the device itself. Pour the old water out first into your sink. If you regularly use your bong, you might want to change the water daily to preserve the flavor or smoke and avoid excessive resin buildup. After that, rinse the bong with running water before the next step.

4. Pour Alcohol Into the Bong and Add Salt

Add enough coarse salt to cover the base of the bong. Then, pour about ¼ cup of isopropyl alcohol inside the device and let it sit for a few minutes.

5. Rinse the Downstem and the Bowl

Take the bowl and the downstem from the storage bags and rinse them. If there is any residue left on hard-to-reach areas, you can use either a cotton swab or a pipe cleaner to clear it out. Rinse again with warm water until you can’t smell the alcohol anymore. 

6. Plug the Bong’s Openings and Shake It

Now, it’s time to rid your bong of the resin buildup. Before shaking it, make sure that you plug both the mouthpiece and the downstem opening. Any rubber or cork stopper will work for this, but you can also buy plugs or caps from your local head shop. Once the openings are plugged, shake the filtration device until the resin comes out and you get the result you want. Pour out the contents and rinse it the same way you rinsed your downstem and bowl.

7. Dry the Parts Before You Reassemble

If you don’t have to use the bong immediately, you can air dry all the cleaned pieces. Again, make sure that there’s no whiff of alcohol left. However, if you need to use it right away, you can use a clean paper towel to dry the device, the bow, and the downstem.
