Our Guide to the 4 Most Iconic Stoner Films of the 90s
Marijuana has had a long and complicated history when it comes to being accepted in the country. It wasn’t too long ago that your favorite dab bubblers and bongs weren’t yet easily accessible. But this has turned around in recent years. Indeed, the country has changed its stance on marijuana as more and more states have legalized it for both recreational and medical purposes.
If you want to understand the way the country looked at cannabis before things started turning around, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better way to do this than through the lens of pop culture. When talking about cannabis and pop culture, you can’t skip the topic of stoner films. Stoner films exploded in popularity in the 90s when stoner culture started getting more popular.
To better understand this subgenre of films, we’ve prepared a short guide to the four most iconic stoner films of the 1990s.
Bongwater (1997)
Due to the nature of this subgenre, many stoner films gravitated towards the comical side of Cinema, and Richard Sears’ Bongwater is a great example of this. The film follows the life of David, played by Luke Wilson, as he tries to navigate all of the substance-fueled hijinks that he constantly gets into while maintaining his personal and romantic relationships. The film was basically a stoner film combined with the elements of classic 90s rom-coms. Now, if you need another reason to see this film, Jack Black is also in it prior to his breakout role in High Fidelity.
Half Baked (1998)
Now, we can’t talk about stoner comedies and not mention Half Baked, as it is the granddaddy of all stoner comedies. Unsurprisingly, the man behind it all was comedic visionary Dave Chappelle. Now, we’re not going to lie and say that Half Baked is on par with masterpieces like Citizen Kane. The film was rather raw and crude, but we can’t ignore its influence on this subgenre. If you think about it, without this movie, we would never have films like Dude, Where My Car? and Pineapple Express!
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a book penned by Hunter S. Thompson. The film adaptation was directed by Terry Gilliam, the man behind the cult classic Brazil. Gilliam was perfect for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as he was able to capture the substance-fueled romp that Thompson portrayed in the original book. A young Johnny Depp played the lead role in the film and masterfully captured the chaotic nature of the book’s main character Raoul Duke.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Don’t let anyone tell you that all stoner films are mediocre. There’s no better film that proves just how wrong that sentiment is than 1998’s The Big Lebowski! The Coen Brothers took the concept of the stoner film to an entirely new level in this production. The Big Lebowski is a cerebral take on the stoner film sub-genre, as it boasts stunning dream-like sequences and an excellent script to boot. However, we can’t give them all the credit as Jeff Bridges’ performances as The Dude is one of the best acting performances in the history of Cinema.
Conclusion
Hopefully, this article has given you valuable insight into the history of cannabis in the country.
While acceptance has been slow, it’s great that cannabis has also been integrated into popular culture. However, remember that this change didn’t happen overnight. Yet, we can’t deny that we may not be where we are now if it wasn’t for the stoner films of the 90s!
